The paper examines transformational games as a way of working through traumatic experience in psychological counselling. It sets out to establish how effective such games are in this work, to identify the mechanisms by which they shift a participant’s emotional state, and to trace the part group dynamics play in processing trauma. The author concludes that transformational games are a promising method in psychological practice and can be of real help when working with traumatic experience.

The paper examines transformational games and metaphorical associative cards as a contemporary method of psychological correction. It shows that transformational games address a wide range of tasks: managing stress, developing personal qualities and working with difficulties in relationships. The author analyses the projective nature of the method, its flexibility, its ability to lower a client’s resistance, its emotional safety and how readily it integrates with other approaches.

The paper weighs the strengths and the limitations of transformational games as an art-therapy method in psychological correction and psychotherapy. Among the strengths it examines emotional and psychological relief, self-knowledge and self-expression, and the release of creative potential. The limitations are treated separately: how deeply the work can go, how far the outcome depends on the facilitator’s skill, and the emotional vulnerability of participants.
